Heroes are not born. They are created by their circumstances and ususally demonstrated remarkable courage. Kai, who made the 8-minute short clip, is definitely one of my heroes. An award-winning short film, ”A Girl Named Kai“ tells the internal conflict culture and identity. “A Girl Named Kai” is the story of a girl who is a boy at heart. The struggle to come out, family dynamics, love, courage and acceptance. To have achieved all that in 8 minutes is remarkable enough. Spending 3 years to create a message for coming out is a story of courage worth sharing.
Another hero, Mookey, has also been getting some worldwide attention that he deserves.
Mookey’s story and his short documentary were featured on New America Media. It’s a story, like “A Girl Named Kai”, about a transgender youth’s transition which includes interviews with Mookey’s parents, the hardship of family acceptance as he began the regiment of hormone replacement treatment.
These two young heroes resonnate with me as they both came from the same culture as mine. Their stories are inspiring and their courage will hopefully touch you as they have touched me.
My salute to all the young heroes who brave the world to discover themselves with uncompromise courage. Their parents - who accepted their transgender children with open arms despite the stima, the cultural conflicts and controversies - are heroes among heroes.
