California’s Comprehensive Health Care Reform

TLC got an invitation from the Governor’s office to attend today’s forum where Governor Schwarzenegger and his senior staff presented their comprehensive plan to bridge the health access gap in the state of California. I have to admit that I was pretty impressed by his office’s bold move.

The difference between this plan and many prior attempts lies in its comprehensive fiscal projection and major shift in the dialog to a plan with shared responsibilities by all Californians. It does translate to a projected tax increase as well as some legislative proposal. Don’t anticipate a smooth sail but do look at it as an important step toward a meaning dialog among all the stakeholders.

By the way, if the plan get to be implemented, the State promised to increase Medi-Cal reimbursement to the competitive level as Medicare. That is definitely promising news for providers and patients. Expect to see health advocacy group to issue statements of support in the next few days and more reactions from consumers and provider groups.
