2007 - Countdown to the New Year

I finally finished drafting a year end review article and will be posting it shortly after some more fine tuning and edits. The New Year is always a time when people make their resolution.
Mine?
My personal goal this year is to begin mentoring one or two community members in the hope that I can share my lessons learned about community activism with them. It has not always been easy but it has definitely been gratifying to see all our advocacy efforts become new policy and legislation for the protection of the transgender community in California.
It is time for the next generation of advocates to take center stage lead with their new dreams and visions.
Taking better of my health is also a priority, in order for me to be care for others, I need to care for myself first. So the next time when you see me going 120 MPH, please stop me and remind me to slow down.
After see a number of my friends’ passing and one of our elders, Claire, gotten diagnosed with terminal cancer, it is hard not to question my own mortality and how good of a friend I really was to them. No matter how busy my schedule is, I promise to find at least one weekend per month to spend with my friends. A weekend of relaxation without devoting one single minute to discuss work or city business is becoming more of a necessity than a luxury. At my age, premature aging is VERY REAL.
Perhaps it is also time to launch another community event. I cannot deny that through big parties is something I love and seem to be very good at. Maybe it’s time to put on my event consultant hat?
I promise that I will do my best not to sell myself short. Insecurity can sometimes be a real ugly beast but inadequacy can be just has dangerous. They are like a two-headed beast that constantly lurks around and wait to devour us at the first sign of weakness. Believe it or not, I have a high tendency to over compensate. That usually translate to another 30 hours of volunteer work on top of my already hectic job. Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do but if I ever want to find my next ex-husband, I will need to make time of him and allow myself to rest a little more often.
Should that fail, I promise that I will find a new cause to advocacy. Having been one of the voices of people with HIV and the transgender community for over a decade, it is time to join a new adventure and to find new partnership. The best tactic for equal rights, in my opinion, is to give other communities the same priority that they have given to us.
Last but not least, maybe I will win the lotto this year…What’s your New Year resolution?
Here’s wishing all of you A Happy and Prosperous 2007!
Big Kisses,

Hey Cecilia! I wish you the best with your resolutions for 2007! I’m sure it’s going to be a good year for you and the community. Taking care of one’s health is definitely something we should all try to do more of. I’m proud to say that today is day 9 without a cigarette! I quit!
